So we added some new books to the sophomore reading list this year. We also changed the summer reading assessments. I'd like to get your feedback about the books on the list and the change in the tests.
* Were you able to find 2 books on the list that had some appeal to you? What did you like about them?
* How do you feel about having a choice in the assessments?
* Were the assessment models helpful?
*What are your suggestions for assessing summer reading?
Please address all of the questions in your posted comments. I will be giving 10 bonus points for proper blog entries.

yes, i was able to find to book on the list that really help me understand life way much better. After reading, "A Long Way Gone" by Ismeal Beth, it has taught me that there is children all around the world having a hard time with their life, but if you keep on trying something good will always happen in the end. Another book I read was the wrong "Stolen Voices", but it did teach me about the war, and what children around my age was going through. And they had it bed. They didn't know if they were going to still be alive the next day.

Yes i was able to find two books that appealed to me, althought i didn't choose any that FosterBHenry chose. I chose "As Simple Of Snow" by:Gregory Galloway as well as "The Silver Kiss" by: Annette Curtis Klause.I Liked A.S.A.S because i love riddles and magic, i enjoyed T.S.K. because i had a liking to vampires since i was in kindergarten. I liked how we had a choice on what book we were going to spend 10 weeks with! The assesment models were very helpful. However next year i would like a wider variety of books i read next year and a LONGER SUMMER TO DO SO "YEAH"!!!(Meant to be a joke dont take it seriously.)

I was able to find books on the list that I found interesting which was weird because that didn't happen to me with last years summer's reading list. I liked that one of the stories was a true story and the another one was about a boy living with autism. I thought that choosing an assessment was good because it made it easier for me to focus on that one assessment. The assessment models were also helpful because since we were able to use notes it helped me on writing down the specific materials I needed. I don't really have any suggestions for assessing summer reading, I'm pretty sure the teachers have that down.

i couldn't find 2 books but the one i liked the most was the same 1 everyone else chose which is "A Long Way Gone" by Ishmael Beah because kids in poverty with guns is something I find interesting. The fact that we had a choice made it seem like it ws easier than it really was. The assessment actally did help me because it showed me exactly what to do. And I don't have any suggestions on that because im not a teacher.

The two books I found on the Summer Reading list were "Ironman" by Chris Crutcher which tought me if you want something that is important to you, you need to work hard at it. And there was "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime" by Mark Haydon which tought me about Asperger Syndrome. both of them were helpful to me and I cant wait to get some new ones.

the two books that i chose were "a long way gone" and "the silver kiss". they both helped me understand life and evryone's situation's that they deal with. "a long way gone" showed me what others deal with during war and "the silver kiss" showed me what others do when a loved one has a serious illness. i liked having the decision in the assesments and i thought the models were helpful. hopefully next year for summer reading there will be a much bigger varitey of books because it seemed that las year had more.

no i didn't have a chance to read any of those books. i read As Simple as Snow and Stolen Voices. These books taught me to be myself and that each person has a gift in them even though if someone tells you you are useless.

Yes; I found books that interested me alot. I found a book that i didn't even think i was going to like until i read it. [which was The Silver Kiss] I liked every thing about the books. Just the way the author described everything was brilliant. The book Ironman made me understand how hard life for people really can be. And throughout the whole story, it makes you feel like theres something you can relate to because everything he faces is stuff other kids will eventually deal with, too. [i.e. having problems with parents, techers, or bullys.] I liked the fact that we had a choice. They were very helpful. And made it easier. Next summer, I hope they have a bigger variety of books. That are more known[ie. To Kill A mocking bird.]

I was able to find two books that I thought I liked. I was only able to read some of the pages of the book The Silver Kiss. For the next summer reading, I would like to read at least two books so I can do better on the summer reading prompt.

Yes, I was able to find two books on the list that appealed to me. One of them is called "The Sliver Kiss" by: Annette Curtis Klause. I really liked this book because it kept me on the edge of my seat with all the vampires. Another book i had read is called "Stolen Voices." I liked this book to, but not as much as the other one. Though "Stolen Voices," did teach me how one person can make a difference in this world, you just have to work for it. I think it was great choosing the assessments because you can actually be comfortable of what you are doing. The assessments were very helpful, it made me understand everything that i had to do. One suggestion is to have more interesting summer reading books please!

I was only able to find one book that appealed to me and it was Ironman, by Chris Crutcher. This book taught me how to never give up on your goals. It made me realize that you can have anything if you put your mind to it and never give up.

I was able to find Ironman and The curious incident of the dog in the night-time. They both interested me and kept me wanting to read those two instead of the others because, one was about something i enjoy doing and involved sports/activity the other because it caught my attention as being a mystery which i enjoy. I think having the choices in the assessments were great because you didnt really have to memorize key facts about the book but the test still had you show your knowledge about it. The models were very helpful because they gave me an idea and how to execute the writing.

The two books i read were "Ironman" and "As Simple As Snow". I fell in love with "As Simple As Snow" after about 50 pages. I learned that people aren't always what you expect them to be and that you should think out side the box and dare to be different.Otheriwse, life is no fun.The other books didn't seem very interesting to me.

Yes I was able to find 2 books on the list that had some appeal to myself. They are The Curious Incident of the Dog in Nighttime and Ironman. I really like them a lot because they both give me passion to keep on reading them when I firstly started reading them, which inspire me a lot in writing and in daily life.
Having a choice in the assessments is totally a good thing to me as I only finish half of Ironman. If the test is for knowledge of facts of the book, it will just make us study the books real hard trying to memorize all the details of the books. However, we will learn the deep meaning and the gain inspiration to our own life if we are tested by writing letters or memos.
The assessment models help me a lot in knowing the format of writing memos and business letters. I will be confused if I don't study the models.
I think that more ways of test can be provided. Say, we can choose to write e-mails or informal notes to the author or the characters in the books.

Yes I was able to find two books on the summer reading list that I really liked. I liked them because I could relate to the books very easily. The assessments were harder than I expected, but I liked being able to choose which one I did. The models were helpful. I would've liked just taking a test like we did in Freshman year.

i was able to find alot of books that appealed to me. i only remember the ones that i read though, which was 'Ironman' and 'The Silver Kiss'. 'The Silver Kiss' is one of those fun fictional suspense thrillers that i usually read. i enjoyed it very much, but it was short and far below my reading level. i would recommend to anyone reading on a 9th or 10th grade reading level, but not someone like me who reads on a 12th grade reading level who's is looking for a challenge. the title of 'Ironman' attracted me to the book. i found out that it wasn't the type of book i usually read or liked. i normally find journal entry books boring, but after a few chapters, i really got into the book and i felt like i really understood Bo. i started feeling everything he was feeling as certain events went by. by the end of the book i felt like i almost completely understood Bo and i was strangely hooked. it wasn't exciting but i couldn't bring myself to put the book down. i was so into the story. THE ONLY THING I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WAS HIS OBSESSION WITH LARRY KING.
ps: i agree with Brandon on the longer summer idea.

Yes i was able to find two books that appeled to me, they were " The Silver Kiss" and " Stolen Voices " They were GREAT..both of them are very well written and very entertaining i would rate both of them 10/10. I felt that it was a great choice to let us choose between those assesments, i think it made it easier. The assesments models were very helpful because they showed us good examples plus what we had to talk about. My suggestions are that people should read those books i've listed because they are very good

I found one book, but I did not find two. The book I found was "A Long Way Gone" by Ishmael Beah. I liked this book because it was an autobiography of a boy soldier, and it was a true story. I admired the character Ishmael Beah because the story is from his point of view, and it shows what he had to go through. He lost his innocence by watching his own friends and family get killed in front of his own eyes. That can relate to street violence going on in our country today. I felt that having a choice was a good way to take the assesment, but I'd rather have a multiple choice quiz on the book because sometimes i forget things in the book, and when i read the available answers it will help me remember what happend in the book. The assesments were helpful for summer reading, but next time i think it would be better if the assesment was multiple choice.

well, I can hardly find the summer books that I want to read. I think is because I just came back from China and the school is almost start. The two books that I choose to read is the "Stolen Voice" and the "The curious incident of the dog in the night-time". I love to read this two books very much. I love both books very much, I enjoy reading these two books and I used only two weeks to finish these two books. This is the first time I am so deep in of reading books.

Yes i was able to find 2 books on the list that both appealed to me which were A Long Way Gone and As Simple As Snow. What I liked about A Long Way Gone was the experience the author tells in the story. The experience of REAL hardships of survival through war. As I read along in the book, the author has a way of putting myself in his shoes. This book appeals to me a lot because I can feel the pain he is going through. As Simple As Snow honestly didn't really appeal to me because I thought the story was really mysterious but weird. The main character in the book is very unique, but I don't really like magic mysterious kind of books. I think the assessment on summer reading should be our choice. Because of this, I believe that we should be capable of choosing our own interests in books. I know it may sound too easy, but there should be a page limit. For example, 300-500 page books but of two and assessed in specific categories so people won't go so off topic.

Yes, i did found 2 books that i really like. I chose "As Simple as Snow" by Gregory Galloway and "The Silver Kiss" by Annette Curtis Klause. I really like "As Simple as Snow" because i found it is very much like real life, in which every school has groups. And because Anna's life stories and her personalities really interest me, and it teached me that everyone is way more different inside, then their outer apperances. And "The Silver Kiss" got me interested because it was about vampires, and fantasy books are always a little more interesting than books about life, and that's why i chose it. It also teached me that people have unique personalities even though they look like they're certain kinds of people who will do certain kinds of things.

I thought that the two books i choose were good because they had more situations that kept me reding more. I read the "Silver Kiss" and "The curious incident of the dog in the night-time." I thought choosing our own assment was a good idea because to choose which one we needed we would have to read it and actully know what it was about. The assement models were very helpfull i actully didn't really get them till i read them that helped me out the most. My opinion is that we should go back to the test because the essay was too complicated for me because we had so many papers I didn't understand anything until a couple days before the test.

When school ends and we always get those summer reading lists sometimes it is very hard for me. Mainly because it is very hard for me to find a book I enjoy. So when they give us these lists I feel very limited to what I can read. The one type of book I really enjoy reading is mystery books, its because it keeps me on my toes. I really enjoyed reading "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime" I like being able to pick the assessments, and I liked that we could come in with notes so we could know what we need to write about.

i found 1 book on the list that i really liked and it was "The Silver Kiss" i really enjoyed the book to read and it was about a girl who her mom had cancer and then a vampire came to her looking for her mom too. I really ejoyed the book. I really want to read more like this book cause it was very intristing.

* Were you able to find 2 books on the list that had some appeal to you? What did you like about them?
Yes, I found two books that appealed to me the most. The Silver Kiss by Annette Curtis Klause and the Curious Incident of the Dog in The Nigh-time by Mark Haddon. I like that they were about teen’s where were around my age. The Silver Kiss was very appealing because it was about two people who share their immortal love for each other. It was very thrilling, exhilarating to see how a girl falls in love with a vampire.
* How do you feel about having a choice in the assessments?
I felt that it was kind of hard because it had almost nothing to do with the story. Like my summer reading notes were useless! Although having the choice made it less stressful for me.
* Were the assessment models helpful?
Yes the assessments were helpful. But in the future if I was to change the assessment models I would change a thing although I would give then to the students for a long period of time to memorize them.
*What are your suggestions for assessing summer reading?
People who do summer reading should always take notes when/during reading and that it would be a good idea to purchase your book; so that you can write al over it.

yes,i did find two books called "silver kiss" by annette klause and "ironman" by chris crutcher. i chose "ironman" because actually last year in ms.gabow's class we were doing book talks and one of my classmates did it on "ironman" so he persuaded me to read it and i had no idea it was one of the books on the list. as far as the "silver kiss" i seen one of my friends read it and it look real interesting. i think its awesome to chose what you want to write about its more better because if you can only choose from one you may not like it to where you can chose from a small variety. it makes writing more fun and interesting. my suggestions for assessing summer reading is maybe having a more variety of books, like teen novels or other genres. maybe doing something like a comic book. get every event like a plot and make it into a comic book. get a piece a paper fold it with lets say 10 or 8 boxes then decorate it. write all about the plot from the pictures you draw.
