Inventing Elliot by Graham Gardner

Elliot Sutton wears many masks to change his reputation and become one of the popular people instead of the outsider he is. When you live under illusions, how do you know what the reality is anymore? If you need to change yourself, are you allowing yourself to be exploited by others? Or are you exploiting yourself? Can your desire to fit in to the crowd be a tragic flaw? What power does Louise give Elliot in his struggle with illusion versus reality? Start blogging about the Othello themes in this novel.

to wear a mask all the time means you dont have the oppertunity to get to know who you are. your left everchanging and theres not much you can do about it. what happens when you run out of guises?

at the beginning of the story is eliot having flashbacks of the hospital and what happened or is that actualy happening?

is Eliot remembering when he changed schools and how he was humiliated or was he remembering all of this?

To answer to natalie's question, I think that Elliot was just remembering his past, how the other people treated him in the past and how could he make himself a new person, without being hurted or humilliated, but sometimes he couldn't anyway because those memories were still alive in his present, it was not so easy to afford it and pretend that nothing happened at his house or just in his mind.

to answer aakash's question, i dont think that eliot hates his dad its just that they dont get along very well and they dont talk wich leaves them very distant.

why didnt elliot stick up for the little kid that was getten hert by all those bullies even though he had the same problome at his old school i think he was selfish enough that just because that happened to him at his old school that that he would actualy just stand there and watch this poor kid get beat up realy bad

i think that natalie makes a good point but that elliot wants to keep a good reputation at his new school.

How does Holden evades his reality, who is the person inside of him turning him into what he doesn't want to be, how could he forget so easily his past and combine it into his present?

Anonymous said...

to answer aakashs question, i think it's because after the accident they didn't have the relationship that they had, and he hates the 'new' dad he got out of it. but i think since he also misses the previous relationship that they had, and the anger he has built up is being taken out on his dad with hate insted of understanding, and taking into consideration that it isn't his dads fault.

What kind of way does Elliot want to be noticed and why?

to answer natalieh's question elliot is having flashbacks of what had happened to him at his last school at the beginning of the story.

in the principle's office why does elliot lie to the principle about gaurdians instead of telling the truth about the gaurdians exsistents?

I think that inventing Eliot is a good book that is very interesting. I agree with a post that was made that Eliot should has stood up for the kid getting beat up in the bathroom.
He should have helped him because he was there. He like that someone was going through what he did at his old school.

Inventing Elliot is a very different book for me to read. Although, it has some interesting characteristics of the protagonist Elliot. He is a very unique kind of character to read about and keeps me interested most of the time!

Elliot says that he is always in a state of fear.Although he is not picked on at school. Why is elliot always in a state of constant fear?

Anonymous said...

Elliot is a strange preson for always refering to him self as he is dead. I think that Elliot should lighten up and look on the better side

Anonymous said...

Elliot is aways in constant fear because he always thinks something bad will happen to him because of his inner voice(his fear) that tells him what to do.

Anonymous said...

why is elliot so paranoid? even like a couple months into his new highschool he's still paranoid someone will notice something about him and start hatin on him. i mean he should lighten up some since he's been made a guardian.

what is that other voice that we read that's around elliot all the time,is it his fear or a voice in his head.

Anonymous said...

to answer jacob's question, i believe the voice is either his conscience or the 'other' side of him, like the whole, angel or devil on your shoulder thing. and its the devil part of him.

a question to sabrina's answer to my question, if the voice in elliot's head is the devil conscience then where is the angle conscience?

So far reading "Eventing Eliot" I think that things in the book go really fast and it stays on one event that is going on for a very long time. This book is very interesting sometimes when something exciting happens. When I am reading I feel that some things happening in it should not be in the book. It's odd thing that happpen in the book.

the guardians are interesting people now i know there students, but that doesnt make sense to me because they say theyve been there for very long then the guardians find some one to take there place. but how can the guardians be as chilren be at a school for a long time? the book kinda looses you in some places

why all of a sudden does elliot want to become friends with that one kid that that was tormented by those football players knowing what hes going to become and knowing he could possibly end up herting this kid and i thaught elliot said that he didnt realy want to hang out with that kid knowing he would have a ad rep? may he put those feelings to the side and decided to hang out with the kid

Inventing Elliot is a good book so far, there are some interesting characters in the book. Elliot seems to fit in at his new school without any problems. He is learning new things and how to be noticed in the right way.

Anonymous said...

what about elliot and that girl,do you think that was elliot's girlfriend or just a friend?

Anonymous said...

i think elliot still wont let go of his past if hes completly changed then hes gonna have to let go of it

Anonymous said...

i would have thaught that elliot would be more happier with the way things are changing in his life so mayb theres somthin else like another reason why he wants to change so much

Anonymous said...

I think that elliot was notticed in a good way like he wanted but was noticed too much when he was targeted to become one of the gaurdians.

Anonymous said...

that moment with ben when he said he didn't help and just wanted to be left alone was probably how ben really felt and how he really feels about everything.

Anonymous said...

Well, inventing elliot for me was realistic, with no so deep imagery but instead some frequent changes of mood and tone, which was great for me to keep my interest on the book.

Anonymous said...

I also felt related to the character somehow, I think that all of us at some point have felt at least a little bit uncomfortable about something of ourselves, it could be something about or body, or the way we feel or the way we react to some frequent aspects in our lifes, that made us take some desicions in order to improve our defects and may not turn out the way we wanted

To answer to Natallie's question, maybe Elliot knew that if he hanged out with Ben he could be in danger but he couldn't avoid what he was, he could try, but you can never scape from what you are, not even a change of home and school, he had that inside, even when there where other parts inside of him that he could change, being with Ben, somehow gave him the security of his past, his real friends, his past life (which was the most important for him I guess)

Anonymous said...

Why does Louise had an absolutely different way to look the book, instead of what Oliver thaught, what is the relevance of the book in both different points of view throught the book?

Anonymous said...

As an answer to first Natalie's question, you can never scape of disguises, they are everywhere and so frequently that is unavoidable, not absolutely, you will always have a pattern to follow, even if you know it or like it or not.

a question...Do you think Elliot will enjoy being the "Guardians"? If so, why?

Anonymous said...

to answer abby's question i think that elliot is getting usto the idea of becomeing a guardian and knowing hes getting himself into this big responsibility it took him a hile to get usto it but hes beginning to realize that if this was his duty from the beginning that hes going to abide by it and not let anything or anyone in his way get in the middle of it.

Anonymous said...

after reading this book i didnt enjoy it very much there were some parts in the story that made u want to keep reading but in the end i figuered i would have enjoyed it more if the book was more thrilling.

Anonymous said...

To anwser abbyg7rultig's questions
"Do you think Elliot will enjoy being the "Guardians"? If so, why?". I think Elliot will enjoy being with the guardians because he will get a chance to experience somthing he didnt at his old school. He will feel more accepted.

Question - Why do you think Elliot keeps going to Ben a.k.a Raw Nose Kid's house even thought he thinks he is going to get seen there?

Anonymous said...

Elliot didn't want to help the kid that was being hurt by all the other kids because he didn't know if the people would turn on him and every thing would go back to the way it use to be or that they might've even killed him if he interfeared.

Anonymous said...

How and why at the end the book he decides to declare about the guardians, even knowing about the problems he was gonna carry beyond him by doing it?

Anonymous said...

How is the book 1984 a key or a picture of imagery in "Inventing Elliot"?

How does Ben realizes that Elliot is a guardian or if he doesn't, why is he afraid of talking to Elliot at the school and protect an image of them?

Anonymous said...

I think that the book "Inventing ELiot" is a good book because I like the author makes Elliot and the Guardians interact with one another. I really like the way that Elliot becomes one of the Guardians at the end of the story.

Anonymous said...

to answer natalie i think that elliot does remember his past but he just wants to leave it all behind him and start a new future at his new school

Anonymous said...

to answer ryan i think elliot is always at a state of fear because that one kid at the beginning of the book is telling him that the gaurdians want to see him. Elliot is getting scared because he's herd that the gaurdians arnt a good thing when they want to see you.
