Kindred by Octavia E. Butler

Dana's life has been pretty normal up until her 26th birthday when she is suddenly sent back in time. How does Dana's gender affect her power both in the present time and her travels to the past? Who is more in control--Rufus or Dana? Is it Rufus' flaws, or some other force that manipulates Dana's travels? Is she more of an outsider in the present or in her slave past? Does Kevin struggle more with jealousy and suspicion or with illusion and reality when his wife disappears for periods of time? Start blogging about the theme connections to Othello.

kindred seems to be agreat book so far i really enjoy it but at the beginning of the novel i dont see how her hand could have gotten "smashed" into the wall and exactaly how did everything happen and what does kevin mean by" almost the whole truth " i would have liked it if Octavia E. Butler

almost the whole truth seems like half truths or 75% of the truth. but to say something is almost whole is like saying the glass is half full/emty. people use such forms of truth all the time to minipulate others or to avoid troube themselves.

I think when the time travel happens abnormal things happen. In the case of time travel it makes it seem like a rather NORMAL thing to happen to loose an Arm.

The book seemed a little bit confusing but its getting pretty interesting but i would like to know why did she travel back so much in time could it be that someone from the past is going to change her future but why is it so important to her that the boy doesnt call her the "n" word? It think that in someway she'll have to live with the boy for sometime and this will get her into trouble. does she feel threatned by the boys father or is it just her i think that maybe his father will be a antagonist in this story because he seems to be the main reason for which the boy calls her

im more interisted in why she travels through time at all. i mean could someone belse be in control of her traveling back in time or is it something random and spontaneous?

So far i think the book is pretty weird. I dont really understand how theres such a big time difference between rufus and dana. The biggest similar theme i found between "Kindred" and "Othello" is illusion vs. reality.

wow this book keeps getting more and more interesting by the minute wow yeah so im doing power as my theme and i think that the fact that the white guards stripp people from their clothes and tell them that its nothing they havnt seen before is pretty disgusting because it shows how they think they can do what ever they want because they are white and for dana who is not used to seeing this kind of thing she must be astonished to see this and now i understand why it was so important for her to be called african ameerican and not the "N" word!!!!

"best go on being the women who dresses like a man"(114).this is significant because she is beggining to realize how every thing goes on around the people she has to see and now she sees how she is an outsider & if she really wants to get involved with the rest of the people or blend in then she should be dressing up like a women not like a women with pants. Where is kevin and why does she state that he is dead ON PAGE 113 SHE SAYS "Kevin might as well be dead.Abandoned in 1819,Kevin was dead, decades dead, perhaps a century dead." she doesnt seem to realize that he couldnt possibly be dead if he wasn't even born then.

i dont know this book is really confusing me cuz im not understanding all the flashbacks and how everything the boy does has to harm her in the present and if it does harm her why couldnt anybody else be sent to do this task and why is her husband being brought up in her past

so far im really enjoying this book. i thought it would be slow and a little draining.
im glad it isnt!! ....its strange and kinda of random how she all of the sudden feels dizzy and pops up into the south...anyway ill finish this blog later...bell!

wow im relly getting the hang of this book it hooks me on so bad i cant stop reading and this has never happened to me before wow anyway im pretty far on the book but i remembered earlier in the book when she was walking to alices house and she was having trouble walking through the dark she made a remark about how she was so much of a city girl i think that to her this could be harming because when your not used to being in the wilderness you dont know what to expect but hey this could be one of her flaws!!!!

im starting to think that the little bow, Rufus, isnt such a great person, that he is starting to be like his dad because in the book one of the slaves warns Dana about his temper.... i wonder why we havent seen that side of him or if it will effect the plot

this book is really easy to get sucked into... i sometimes forget that we need to look for quoted too so i just find myself in the book

well...i finished the book...about a week ago...and i really enjoyed it.

but the ending was kinda blah..
ya know...
i dont wanna ruin the book for you but anywho!
i dont like...how Rufus turned out to be a real jerk off...

he lied to Dana and hurt alice and her...making Alice eventually kill herself...
that kinda pissed me off...but whatever...what do you expect from a guy that lives during that time?!

this book gets better by the minute first of all wow Rufus has really changed over time especially after five years.Kevin has stayed in the past so this must mean that he has become aged. I believe that Rufus has some type of obsesion for Alice because the way he acts toward women shows that he thinks he gets his opower by controlling the women in his life and if he doesnt than he simply feels he has no power thats why maybe he he doesnt want dana to leave and instead he feels that being able to show his male white power will get people to respect him and love him and its not true

everything that is going on in this time period is still seen today and a example of this would be the fact that rufus is so controlling and not what dan thinks he is because if he were dana wouldnt have to be told by so many of the sevants that rufus is dangerouse any way i would like to know if mrs octavia butler ment to have dana dissapear everytimr that there is danger and if that is so whay does she do that could it be that dana has to save her past but at the same time still make sure that she doesnt get into trouble because of helping her relative rufus live life right and not die!

Iforgot to say that the fact that Rufus wants alice for him and for him alone he reminds me of Othello when he said that he wouldnt of cared if others would have taken Desamona as long as he didn't know it. Both of these men are alike because they wont put up with anything until they get what they want and when they want it so this could be a flaw for both these men and will be a flaw for them maybe even a tragic flaw that will cost them their lives and maybe the lives of the ones they (supposably)truly LOVE!!!! thats it i think thats all i have to say for now see you tomorrow or when ever i post a blog again - bye

do you think that while Kevin was stuck in the past, that he has become racist, even in the slightest of ways?

Anonymous said...

ok now i think that rufus is really crazy and what was that matter that was so important for kevin to talk to weylin about

Anonymous said...

did anyone else think that rufus shares some of the qualities of iago? i think he has a simillar honest facade to go along with the fact that rufus turns out to be a not so great person.

Anonymous said...

i think that over those five years that kevin spent away froom home he was easily influenced by mr waylin and rufus and thats why dana made that comparison between them i think that that might of been one of the reasons why he moved up north as well and he got the scar on his head

i am thinking that dana is more like desdemona....she seems to have innocence beyond her years....and others are taking advantage of her.

What do you think of Dana?

Anonymous said...

"Dana should create a forum named "time travelers of the world unite!" And all of the time travelors can travel back in time and introduce to the world...

Postets!"

That was me... I just wasn't logged in :/

we should of used blogspot, blogger is lame-o.

this book is really starting to get interesting... too bad i only have a couple more pages left

OMG I CANT BELIEVE IT i cant believe that Alice killed herself just not to be with Rufus thats so sad i dont see how Rufus could of been so mean and not willing to give alice her freedom omg thats so sad and wow danas hand in the wall i didnt get at the beginning but later i understood everything wow its amazing and i have no more to say I LOVED THIS BOOK really its one of the best i have read so far and ive only read about 8 books AMAZING

Anonymous said...

do you think that the only reason that Dana lets Alice push her around and down talk her is that she feels sorry for her or do you think that there could be other reasons to it?

Anonymous said...

Well i thought the book had alot of illusion vs reality....i didn't know what to believe most of the time..but that kind of gave the author creative lisence to make the book more interesting and

i also think that Dana was treated poorly by Alice because she feels it is pointless to defend herself in that kind of situation.

Oh and Blogger (Owned By Google) bought out Blogspot...so it is essentially the same site... ((A blogspot address with Blogger sotfware))

omg the ending was so surprising

Anonymous said...

it was a really big irony that dana killed rufus because she has always been the one to save him from beeing killed vbut this was always to her advantage because all she waited for was for her relative to be born because she had to keep herself alive before she could even be born and octavia butler forshadows that he will try to rape her everytime that mr.waylin said that rufus just wanted someone to have sex with and maybe it was true but also its really wierd how mr. weylin dies and i think that rufus is crazy for blaming Dana but i cant get the thougth from my mind that maybe Dana did it on porpose because she said she gave him CPR in discust

Anonymous said...

AAAAHHHH that was so scary OMG i think i would be in shock if my hand had gotten stuck in the past and how gross they cut off danas hand illl i feel sorry for Kevin though because he got the blame for something that isnt true but the good thing is that no one or anything can prove that he hit dana

Anonymous said...

i was suprised but i thought that the ending fit the prologue well and i knew something would happen to the arm.

did anyone else see this coming?

i thought the book also foreshadowed something bad happening to dana.

Anonymous said...

do you think Rufus realizes that he has turned into someone even worse than his own father?

Anonymous said...

Yeah i think that is one of the main points of the movie. when he becomes worse than his father he is signaling that somethings never change and dana's actions kept him alive, but also made him into a bad person. it just shows how dana's journey was more of a personal journey that anything else.

Did anyone see an OUTSIDER connection between this and othello?

Anonymous said...

so i only have like, 3 more days to post 9 blogs, so im trying to get a few more in. but its basically really wierd how rufus gets jealous of dana and kevin. i wonder if hes in love with her, or just like dana said they just have a bond. i think he raped alice becuase she look like dana

Anonymous said...

do you think that this relly happens oin real life and that this can really adffect this? i mean how would she even exist to help her be born if rufus was supposed to have died as a little kid?

Anonymous said...

i think rufus is jealous because he becomes power-hungry. he doesnt know right from wrong because of the way he was raised.
