"We Real Cool" is a poem by Gwendolyn Brooks and its about fun. It seems to me that is poem somehow relates to teenagers because it says in the poem 'We real cool. We
Left school. We Lurk late.' it means that we are really cool we cut school and go to some other place to have fun. The author try to show how teenagers are and what they think of themselves.

a possible theme topic for this poem is popularity: the acceptance of failure to become popular

Thia poem is short, but gets right to the point, it has beggining, and an end. And it teaches a lesson, an important one.

"We Real Cool" is a poem about reputation. I believe cool is a term used for people to try and get up to. It is a set standard made up by teenagers and is almost like a guidline. It shows how kids can loose their identity. The author trys to show how kids think beeing "cool" means everything.

The theme is obviously: Don't drop out of school. (or at least don't cut classes, depending on what "left" means)

I can think of a poem of my own

Pretty Smart
Got Degree in art

Nothing in my field
A mcdonalds spatula I wield

I went with the crowd
Now I complain real loud

Waisted my life away
On the computer I stay.

My health is poor
My bones are old and sore

At least in this smart nation
I understand collisionalde-excitation

My point to this poem? The author made a generalization. Quitting School doesn't make you doomed to failure. There are plenty of college educated taxi cab drivers in the city.

Commen Sense and being the best in your field is better then any degree.

I don't want to type to much about my thoughts on the authors message so I will stop here.

And please excuse the puncuation in my last post. Put periods where you feel necessary

as short and simple as this poem looks its not that at all. its was actually hard for me to figure out and i dtill dont fully get it. i can feel there was alot of emotion put into this poem and it shows.

i think that this poem is about how people do the wrong thing to become popular, but in conclusion, they end up w/ a shorter life.

so this poem has rythym in different areas of the poem but
for e.g. one of them were found
in the first stanza and it reads We read cool.We left school.
it also has repitition
an e.g.
is found in stanzas 1-4 using th word "We" is repeated throughout the poem.

Basically i think this poem makes good points like how people think their cool when doing bad things with others and u can tell that by the word "We" being repeated in the poem showing that they think their cool with others like friends ect. and not their self.

This is talking about coolness within teenagers, how we are cool. Also to me, this poem is sending a message of relaxtion, like takeing everything easy no stress. And being cool.

i didnt understand the poem that much....but i think it has something to do with having fun during life cause you only live once

the poem "We Real Cool" is trying to tell us how teenagers have fun doing things that many teenagers do and being kind of rebelious.

Anonymous said...

there's a lot said. Its a really good less. and it true.

Anonymous said...

i think that the author's point that she is trying to get across is that don't rty and be something your not, becasue in the end you'll regret your decisions

Anonymous said...

What this poem sounds to me, and I don't want this to sound offensive, is that it ssounds sort of gang related with the strike straight, lurk late, and the die soon thing at the end. All though if it isn't gang related, then it's mostely about teens trying to act cool then.

The poem is about those people who are not successful in life. From the begining these people donot take life seriously and they wasted their time at school and they had no interest in studies. As a result, they end up leaving school without achiving anything. After that they spend their time lurking around and getting involved in sinful acts. often, the result of these is shorter life.

This poem '' We Real Cool ''shows the theme of trying to fit in and be something because of peer preesure. This is realated too many high school students now days.

Anonymous said...

i think "we real cool" is about teenagers who think of themselves as "cool teens" just because they do things like cut school and stay out late but in the end we all gorw up and live life in different ways but we all end life the same way by dying.

Anonymous said...

i think this poem is kind of easy and straight forward, the main idea is to let the readers know that "shouldn't leave school and the serious consiquence." which i think it is effective to teens

Anonymous said...

we real cool is about a poem about how a group of kids do things and how they think its really cool, but in the end the cool stuff they do ended up killing them.

Anonymous said...

i agree with olivia on how everybody always wants to be accepted and this shows people will do anything even if it hurts them.

Anonymous said...

"we real cool" is a poem about popularity, becuase it seems to be concentrated to high school students, becuase it says that they left school. its about popularity becuase they obviously did all of those things just to be cool.

Anonymous said...

this poem is like just stating the obvious; how people think that its cool to ditch and drink and do so much stuff, but in reality, your just putting yourself in situations where your life is at stake.

and thats the reason why i thought that a possible theme topic for this poem would be lonesomeness(?)
because kids feel lonely, which makes them want to fit in more and they think by doing stupid things that it would make them fit in.

Anonymous said...

this poem is confusing for me but i guess it shows that you have to try to live your life the best you can.It doesnt mean you have do the easiest things. You have to do your best!!

Anonymous said...

Rhyme and rhythm sound fun in this poem. It seems like black guys hanging out and being cool. The twist is that "we die soon". So it's not just about having fun in life. The whole poem is real cool...

The poem is telling us the importance of been in the school and the consequences out of a decision of quitting it. I think the author has an excellent way of expressing the meaning, by using contradictory statements, as we can see in the title “We real cool” because it doesn’t have the “are” inside the sentence therefore it seems to show the lack of grammar that young students may have, also, the use of monosyllabic words tells us how students cant communicate using “big words” that means they have lack of vocabulary. These elements, besides others, make to get into the meaning of the poem: that education is a tool that would help young people like me to live REAL life based on the wonderful power that knowledge can give you

Anonymous said...

In We Real Cool, the author is trying to express the consequesce of droping out of school and lack of effort in school work.

What is interesting is only the last sentence of the poem has negative emotion. And it really require thinking inorder to understand the deeper meaning.

every two lines rhyme. i dont really get what the poem is trying to say and i dont really know what the plot of the poem is.

Anonymous said...

i think the peom is saying that if you sin and do bad things you're not going to live very long. its like how teenagers think they are cool by cuttin class, and staying out late, which in THE END doesnt pay off.

Anonymous said...

I think that the poet is saying that in the poem the kids are real "cool" and do like everything teens shouldnt do and then at the end she says they die soon and i think why she says that is because they do stuff thats dangerous 2 them and their health so they'll die soon.

I think that the poem teaches a lesson about what you shouldnt do.

Anonymous said...

i dont really understand it but i know the poet is talking about teens and the things that they do in there teen years that isnt so good.

Anonymous said...

i think the theme is bring popular becasue htere skipping shool and doing dumb things

i think this poem is talking about peoples love for jazz, when it says 'we left school' i think its saying they left beacuse they wanted to listen to jazz.

i think this poem was about some teenagers who think they are really cool..too cool for anyone else..i think the theme of this poem is about being who you are..and not trying to be something your not. this poem has rythym it separates stanzas after every two sentences.

mireyas6cerra said...

this poem has sone rime in it and it starts off every sentence almost the same. it seems like someone left school.

marlenem6Cerra said...

In the poem "We Real Cool" i think the author is writing about life when he was a teenager and what his friends and him liked to do. when he says "lurk late." and "sing sin." this is what he would do for fun or thought was cool.

Anonymous said...

The poem is about people that only want to have fun but theur choices will lead to death.

Anonymous said...

this poem can be interpreted in many different ways. the way i see this poem is that it's about a group of friends who do "cool" things [such as drinking, drugs. i can tell by the use of sin] and they pay the concequences by death. what the author is most likely trying to say is that by doing these kinds of things, which you may think is cool and fun to do at the moment, could possibly affect and ruin your life [aka death]. she also might be saying [to teens] is that if you don't take your life seriously now, in the future, you will regret it.

Anonymous said...

this poem is not like a "everyday" poem, but it's very interesting how it's written & possibly can have a moral behind the poem itself.

Anonymous said...

i think this poem is saying that some kids think there too cool for school..and like they usaly go out and drink...and it also shows that they are like going to die because they there to cool and that they drink

this poem is about popularity and how people make bad decesions to become popular.

this is a good poem it is about droping school and how it will old after a while

I think the speaker is like someone who waisted his life with some other boys, and now they are regret about the bad things that they made. When they said in the poem "We left school" I think after left school they have fun, but it end soon.
They waisted their time in things that were not too important as school was. This poem has a rhyme in each sentence and also each sentence start with "We". I think this is a good poem because it teach us that life is something important that we have to advantage.

this poem have very strong theme, and very short poem. i feeling very funny.this poem is popularity. the author try to show how the kids think cool meaning. and show people do the wrong things to become popular. and about those people who are not success in life.

Anonymous said...

i think in "we real cool", the author is showing the feeling free and people can do the things they want in their mind. the cool is a symbol that freedom and do the thing in their midn.

i think this poem shows how teens today do things to be "cool". at first the poems starts with little thinga like leaving school or staying out late but ends with dying. i think that shows how the things that teens do to be cool start out little and don't think too much about it but it moves on to worse things

tmobley6cerra said...

this poems shows how we all act today. it shows how teenagers try to be cool by leaving school, swear, drink, stay out late, and trying to act cool when were actually in class. i like the very last stanza, where it says, "we die soon".. i think this means, if we keep getting into trouble, we'll eventually find it, and it will be too late to go back. also, i think it could mean live life to the fullest cause your gonna die soon.. hahah, i just got really confused..

Anonymous said...

i think that it is about a group of old friends remembering all the stuff they did and how cool they were?>...

Anonymous said...

this poem is about a few high school friends that hung out together.

Anonymous said...

I think it means if u do bad things like they did then that means that you will die soon yada

Anonymous said...

I think this poem means that when you do bad things, that there are more possibility that you would not be successful. Also just having popularity won't make you a successful person. There are more things than being popular and doing bad "fun","cool" things. This poem relates so many teenagers these days. Maybe the author is teaching a valuable lesson for these teenagers who are choosing the wrong path.

I think this poem talks about how she met these two boys on the streets. I guess she wasn't popular. so she rides her bikes with them as people seen her with two cute boys. After a while, She regrets meeting them because they probably was acting a fool. The boys had her on her knees convincing her to do something for them. so she regrets meeting or being with them. I guess she's an easy type of girl that takes things from boys she doesn't even know.

"We Real Cool" is a poem about ...well in my opinion...about...not having fun...but doing fun things that you were not suppose to do...you knoe...and that if you do something that you were not suppose to then something bad is going to happend and rhen you will regret it...yeah thats how I FEEL...AND MARTIN YOUR HELLA TRIPPIN ...YADDDAA

this poem i found to have a meaning that is really strong and extremely full of hidden meanings. i think that the author is trying to say that everything she named is bad and if done can lead to death and she is probably showing this mesege to young people probably!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

this poem i think shows how some teenagers think and act. Cutting school, staying out late, and all the other stuff.

"We Real Cool" is about teenagers who don't care about education and all that. Teenagers who think they are cool by not caring.

Anonymous said...

This poem is short but it also has a lot of content. these people are saying that they left school to have fun but it soon ended. They wasted their time and their life is ruined.

Anonymous said...

why does the poem have artocious grammer? i think brooks was saying something through the change in dialect. the fact they left school prolly was the result for that, they leave school get into worse scinarois than they thought they needed to be in and in the end the fun of being cool just killed them. what a life. teens seem to think they're emortal thats why they continuesly disregard warnings and "be cool".

Anonymous said...

The poem "We Real Cool" by Gwendolyn Brooks the theme that i think is it could be popularity thinking that they are to cool for school. It can also be that the rebels who leave school because they think they're to cool for school and either don't come to class or just dropout. They think they are failures and that their life isn't worth living.

Anonymous said...

well the poem is sort of saying not to cut school because then you will get caught

The poem has a rythm, repetition and ryhme. The stanzas are uniform and stanzas breaks the same number of words per stanza. The author used simple language for this poem. The message of the poem is that life is like a game. They are happy-go-lucky people. :) i really like this poem.

i think this poem is talking about kids who life their life dangerously and how they think their cool, are just putting them selves in positions where their susceptible to fatal accidents.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Natalie to the point that we all end up in the same place in the end, but at the same time I think the poem is really saying that we all act cool like the things we do aren't bad even though in the back of our minds we all know it's not good and that we're headed for trouble.

Anonymous said...

I think that the author is trying to show that many teenagers make bad decisions and those decisions have a negative outcome at the end.

I think the author is writing about how most people try to act cool by being and doing bad things.

i say that this poem is about whoever wants to be popular has to do bad things. I say if you do anything good people will think your popular but not doing bad things like drugs or drinking

i think that the autor uses unproper english on puspose, (we real cool) as a reanactment of the slang spoken by teenagers.

i believe that this poem can be about two things...
1.giving into peer pressure and while doing so they die at an earlier age.
2.people having so much fun now and just taking advantage of what god is giving them which is life since life is so short.

Anonymous said...

sounds liek there just trying to be cool and also sounds like they might die at a young ageeeeeeeeee

I think the poem is talking about kids who life their life dangerously and how they think their cool, by putting themselves in dangerous situations that would cause them to die at a young age.

"We Real Cool", by Gwendolyn Brooks, influences me to think it's about how teenagers think they are really cool doing stupid things teenagers do. I think this poem is very true, because kids really do these things to make themselves seem "cooler".
