Our poem today is one of Ms. Krueger's favorites.

this poem was confusing at first but i think its trying to say that everything he did, he did it when he was fifteen..

This poem is basically about young memories.I think he is talking about
how he used to had a lot of fun and he used to go on motor cycle ride with his friends... i didn't really get this poem its kind a confusing.

When you are fifteen everything seems possible and that's what the character of this poem thinks.
The autor keeps repeting "I was fifteen" to create the oposite image, that the character had no power to do anything.

When I read this poem it made me think the person in the peom liked to ride their motor cycle and ride for along distances. I think this poem shows a memorable moment when they were fifteen and remembering ever detail about it.I also think that maybe this poem shows a motor cycle accident that happened and made an impact on their life.

This poem is mostely about what he rememberd from past memories and remembering the motecycle.

all i get from this poem was the author was passing a road that makes him remember his teenage...he keep repeat the word fifteen is because he want to show that it has been a long time since then..years has past, it was the same people...passing the same road, but different stage of mind..

in this poem, the author [at age 15] understands the meaning of life. he found a motorcycle laying on the ground, and you know how most boys want a mototcyle at that age, he wanted to ride it. he just wanted to ride it, and be reckless, careless. but coming upon that idea of being reckless, he thought that since he found the bike laying there, someone might of been reckless and got into an accident. so when he went to look he found the guy. this showed him that he shouldn't be careless, and to appreciate life.

Anonymous said...

It helped me see the speakers transformation by using descriptive words. Such as "High grass, lay on its side, and demure headlights"
I think the mood is confused. I think that because when the guy called him "good man" and then he said later on that he was only fifteen.
I think the author says hes fifteen because the guy called him good man and that he was only fifteen wondering why he considered him as a young man.

The poem “Fifteen” by William Stafford is telling us a “story” but at the same time he is describing how teenagers act, for example, “…meet the sky out of seventeenth. I thought about hills”, this seems like the guy whom is telling the story wants to run away not been seventeen already, and I know that when you are around that age(fifteen) you have thought about going out of home and make your own way because you think your parents don’t understand you and things like that. So I think the message in this poem is that even thought teenagers see everything easy, the reality is completely different and not that easy as he shows when the boy see the owner of the motorcycle and all his dreams about other places went down right away and nothing changed anyways as we see when he is still fifteen and he is still staying there “I stood there, fifteen”

Anonymous said...

it seems like the 15 year old boy acts like everyone knows eachother in some kind of way because hes using words that would describe a friend and its like hes saying that everyone knows eachother in a past life.

Nobody else see's that this is really about a stolen motorcycle? (on the surface)

A 15 year old came across a motorcycle (still running) then he steals it, then he starts to think about the driver that was probably injured and dying, and he justifies everything by saying that he was only 15.

___________
Finding the bike
"South of the Bridge... I found... motorcycle with engine running as it lay on its side"

Stealing the bike
_________
Stealing the bike
" I led it gently
to the road and stood"
______________-
thinking about injured owner
" I found
the owner, just coming to, where he had flipped
over the rail."

Yes, the owner fell off the bridge and the kid stole it.

The authors message? Don't act impulsevly (maybe)

the choices we have made lead us to where we are and where we're going. he was only fifteen an dhe had a choice. he made that chice and was considered better for it.

i agreed with fred at first, that this was about a stolen motorcycle. but after thinking and reading other posts i agree with kassie, i think when he stole the motorcycle he was looking for a joyride, and then when he thought about and found the owner he gave it back, realizig that at 1 he learned not to be so careless and to truly appreciate life.

Anonymous said...

I read the poem, and didnt really get what it was about, but then i read the other posts, and read it again, and now i think that this poem is about choices, like the other one. except "riding bikes with older boys" was about how her decision had a bad outcome, and the 15 year old boys outcome was good becuase instead of stealing the bike, he gave it back. Then he tries to justify wanting to take it by saying he was only 15.

i think this poem was about the guy at fifteen years old. it shows that even thogh he was fifteen he was able 2 help a man that was in need of help. he also uses imagery to say what the motorcycle looked like and what the position of it was. it said it roared making it seem like an animal, or some kind of furious thing.

Anonymous said...

The author keeps repeating "I was Fifteen" because he tries to shoe that it happened when he was young. Everything that he had done and the fun he had.

Anonymous said...

This poem is just talking about everything that the writer did when he was fifteen and all his memories.
Then he starts talking about his the motorcycle that he found (stole).

Anonymous said...

I think that the poem is truly about maturity. I think that the man teling the story within the poem is saying that when you're fifteen you have different views on life and different morals. I think that he's trying to say when you mature you realize that you would have made different decisions when you were fifteen.

Anonymous said...

i thought that this poem was about a fifteen-year old boy who comes across a motorcycle by the side of the road. he immediately thinks of how welcoming the bike looks, and how many different ways he could be reckless with it. i'm not sure, but i think he takes it for a short ride. then he realizes that it is out there, alone and still running for a reason. With that in his mind, he looks for and finds the rider, fallen and bleeding, then helps him to it. as he watches the bike's owner ride away, he is left to think about how his own lack of logic and irresponsibile, immature thoughts could have cost the man his life.

I think the theme is memories....hes thinking about the past and the good or bad memories he hadeded

Anonymous said...

well i think that the author of this poem is trying to say that even if you are young you need to stand up for yourself and what you believe because if you dont you might loose something you really like and since your young you think you have no say but thats not true!i think that the motor cycle is a great example of this because if he hadnt given it up to a person who didnt seem to take care of it he would of had a motorcycle he really liked but maybe he didnt really mean for this poem to be thought of like that but instead of something he desired at the age of 15 but just gave up for not speeking up to someone who maybe wasnt worth having what he wanted!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

i think it means that even when you are young you will still have to defend yourself with your problems...

Anonymous said...

I think that in this poem the theme is memories because he remembers about the time he was fifteen years old and wanted to be carefree, but now that hes older and has a different view on things hes becoming more careful and thats why he remebers the time when he was carefree and was able to do anything he wanted to.

Anonymous said...

I think what he tries to show in this poem relly, is the fact that even if you are not an adult, if you have a big heart you can help others, leaving aside how much fun you can take by it.

Anonymous said...

i think that "Fifteen" represents the writers experience in growing up. At first he saw the motor cycle with pure admiration and just loved it and saw the goodness of it, but after seeing the accident in which it came from and helping out the man, it seemed that he then knew it was time to grow up and would then see things differently than prior to the accident.

Anonymous said...

This poem ends every stanza with the words "i was fifteen" and i think the author does this to show that maybe the age of fifteen was an important age for the person in the poem.

I think this poem is about someones memories about motorcylces during their younger days. They find out that motorcycles are enjoyable and dangerous at the same time.

Anonymous said...

i dont think that the author is talking aboput a motorcycle at all, or that seventeenth was a street. i got that he was thinking back to when he was 15, and wondering how great it would be to 17, and even on the journey to being that old would be great; having so much fun and being invincible and full of youth. But then, he realized that all journeys dont have the best turn out, and that he might get hurt if he doesnt watch out, and re-think how indestructable he really is

Anonymous said...

i think that he was just having fun, enjoying the young life, taking all risks to have a good time, but ran into someone who gave him a reality check about how much you can really take

Anonymous said...

Obviously, this poem is about a guy who is 15 & has a lot of memories to tell when he was 15. It has to do with his youth & how any suitable age could help or save a life if you really try.

Anonymous said...

It seems like he regrets not getting on the motorcycle. But even at a young age you can be a good person, and he helped the guy get on his motorcycle.

vvinal2cerra said...

this poem is about memories from the past, where he goes back to when he was fifteen and how he enjoyed that time. hes able to look back and ponder about all the times he had, and about his motorcycle rides. by repeating when i was fifteen, the reader gets the sense of the poet or narrator really thinking and going in the past. i think the poet did a really beautiful job on expressing this throughout the poem.

the boy in the poem seems to be going back in his memories of what he used to do with his friends...i dont understand the ending where a man flips over?

Anonymous said...

This poem was confusing, but what I think the poem is trying to say is that when the guy was fifteen he remembered what happened to the guy that was on the motorcycle and what he did and how he felt.

Anonymous said...

i think the boy feels more like an adult because he helped a guy after he crashed on his bike.

Anonymous said...

the words “I admired all that pulsing gleam, the shiny flanks, the demure headlights fringed where it lay; I led it gently to the road and stood with that companion, ready and friendly.” brings us a animate mood. i think the memories of the author's of when he's fifteen is happy and alive. he repeats he was fifteen in each standard. it is the key word in this poem. maybe the life when he was fifteen was happy can he cant forget them

Anonymous said...

i think he probably saw a moto accident an it weirded him out an he hallucinatied i dont know how maybe scared or on drugs

Anonymous said...

i think the poem is about the author when he was 15 years old and remembers a motorcyle that belonged to an owner that got in an accident with it. the author remembers helping the man.

This poem i think is about a someone who wonders if he did something different how things could have turned out and how he was remembering that him being fifteen and not knowing what to chose.

This poem talks about a girl who was fifteen. I thik the author is trying to say, that we all have to live our life as much as we can and as easy possible. But the author is also saying that been fifteen is not that easy as we thougth it is. so i think the author donnot wanted to be seventeen, because she thought life going to be more dificult.

This poem is about an experience this person had as a 15 year old. By the way he is talking it shows that this certain experience had an impact on him. He goes into great detail on what his experience with his motorcycle to give the readers a better feel.

i dont think he stole the bike. ithink in his mind he wanted the bike and was thinking about what he could do with it. but when he found the driver he chose to help him and the man rode off with a thanks.

i think it was about how hes getting old now and looking back on how we was 15 once, and the fun and innocence and had. and now hes older with resposibilities and with different goals and different look on things.

i didn't really understand this poem, he was 15 when he found a guy that crashed his motorcycle. Or maybe it could mean that you should never give up even though you might fall couple of times. I really don't know.

Anonymous said...

i think the peom shows how the boy though bike were really cool and admired them. he thought it was something exciting and imagened himself ridng a motorcycle. he didn't think about what it was doing there or it got there, until he saw the owner. he then realized the truth and also how dangerous motorcycles could be.

tmobley6cerra said...

this poem tells a story about an even that happened to this man when he was fifteen. he found a really cool bike, and it made his day. then wehn he sees the motorcycilist, he has to return the bike, but he will never forget that one day of being fifteen and riding the motorcycle.

Anonymous said...

the reason he keeos on say that he is 15 is because he shows how that if you are 15 you still can help people who are need

He's using his life as an example to describe what fifteen year old boys like to do for fun. This poem can relate to the lives of other fifteen year old boys.

I think the poem is bout the author who loved the year when he was the age 15

Anonymous said...

i don't get the poem but i think it mostly about a kid that is remembering his past and how good and fun it was>

Anonymous said...

the poem is about a kid who sees the bike that crashed and notice the man he helps him up and the biker rides off ,it shows how the kid was young but took the time and responsibility to do something good.

Anonymous said...

i think this poem was about a guy at the age of fifteen years old. this shows that even thought that he is kind of young doesn't mean that he can't help anyone. For example he helped the old man in this story.

Anonymous said...

in addition, it was a fifteen year old boy's memory about an motorcycle accident and at that time he probably made a wrong decision to take the motorcycle away...until he sees the owner then he felt regret about what he have done..

Anonymous said...

at first it hought this poem was about a fifteen year old and his motorcycle but as the poem went on you see that he was really only help a man that had flipped off of his motorcycle. this poem is about young memories and doing somehitng nice for someone else.

in this poem the writer talks about his times when he was fifteen. He mainly talks about one inncident when he helped a man who just was in a motorcycle accident. This story is based on a flashback of the writer's life.

poem shows a memorable moment for the poet when he was fifteen. he had interest in motorcycle, and this poem also says that he is goodman by helping his owner.

i notice that he repeated 15 several times so it must mean 15 was a important age for him!!!!

when the author kept repeating "i am fifteen" over and over again after each stanza that made the mood to me seem like it was innocent and surprised like he had never seen it before.

kiarakreugar5 said...

i'm starting to think that the boy never even got to ride this motorcycle because when he thought back he saw the owner and it seems as if he crashed and the owner ended up taking the bike a road away. i think that this was all in the boys imagination and that he wished that he had a bike since he already had such a great relationship with the motorcycle.

Anonymous said...

i think this poem was about all the memories he had .. how he used to have alot of fun

i dont really get the moral of this poem but i think he is trying to tell everyone who is reading his poem that u only get to be 15 once, you should do what you want to do but dont get in trouble for it.

Anonymous said...

this poem i can understand it a little. but anyways i think its saying that a boy at the age of 15 must've found this motorcycle and kind of describing the way it looks and what it would be like to ride it but then later finds the owner who probly had gotten into and accident, like he must've fell or something. then the boy helps the owner out and take him to his bike (remember the dudes hand was bleeding?) then the guy left and that was it. it happen to him when he was 15, so of course a little boy at the age of 15 would feel good about 1. seeing a motorcyle 2. helping some guy out and 3. getting props from the guy so yeah thats proly what im thinking and what proly happened.......

cheyannegkruger6 said...

i didnt really understand this poem. first i thought it had to do with a boy riding the motorcycle? then i says that a man falls off the mororcycle? i thought maybe his dad died and that was a remake of the accident?

This poem fifteen tells the point of view on life this boy has. He wants a motercycle to be free but then he realizes the dangers it comes with. These are his memories of motercycles i guess.

the poem was really confusing in my opinion but i think its about a fifteen year old who wants 2 seal this guy bike but sees all the dangerous it comes with.

Anonymous said...

the poem sounds like when the person who is telling it is making it sound when they were 15 years old. telling back on there life or whateverrr

Anonymous said...

The poem is about the simple and pleasureable life of the author in his fifteen, his tone is positive but a little sad, sad about his friendship with these people are lost and he hope can experience that again.

Anonymous said...

well i really like this poem its about him telling us a story when he was fifteen he saw a motorcycle in the road so he stoped and he was waiting to see if the owner was anywhere near and then he saw a man that was bleeding si he helped him and gae him his bike back. The owner just thanked him and he felt really glad he didnt take the mans bike. Shows how nice it is to do something good in life then just take away things from other people

Anonymous said...

I think thge author is trying to express how he feels while remembering when he was fifteen. He is proving us readers that at that age, we think everything is possible althought the reality is that its not. he shows his thoughts telling us memorable things that happened to him when he was fifteen

mikemat33 said...

The poem is about the kid changing from a teenager to an adult. I think that the kid decides what to do when he sees the bike. While he is admiring the bike his is in his own fantasy land, but in the fourth stanza he seems to come back to reality and notice that the owner was injured and headed toward the motorcycle. This poem is a change from childhood to adulthood. The kid matures more in the end and is called a man by the biker.
