"Brownies" by ZZ Packer

So is this the image you expected after reading ZZ Packer's short story, Brownies? Go to the following link from the Girl Scouts of America homepage to read the program goals for Brownies and Girl Scouts. After that, click on the link to read the Girl Scout Promise and Law.

How true to the program and its goals are Arnetta, Octavia, Janice, Daphne, Snot and the remaining girls in the troop?

Should they all be allowed to continue as Brownies or Girl Scouts after the incident at Camp Crescendo?

Be sure to justify your response with evidence from the story. Post your comments now.

i don't belive the girls are really true to the program of camp crescendo because they were only thinging about what they wanted to do & they didn't really think there actions thru before acting. and even though they didn't do that they should still go back to camp because they were defending their race and what someone thought of them, so yes they should be let back in.

i don't belive they are true to the program. to me it just seems like they want to get back at the girls for what they said. they shouldn't be let back into the camp because it could happen again.

Please remember to provide evidence (CDs) from the Girl Scout links along with CDs from "Brownies" by ZZ Packer.

according to the girl scout law and promise, the girls did the opposite of what they should have done, instead of being nice, they chose to be mean and cruel. I dont think these girls should be removed from the brown troop because, everyone makes mistakes and there is still time to change while you are young and learning.

I don't think the girls should allowe to be Brownie anymore. This is because they break the Brownie's rules and if they don't have some punishment, they will never learn a lesson.

The girls in Ms. Margolin's troop don't seem, to me, to be *abiding* by the girls scout motto . But the real trouble makers are really Arnetta and Octavia. The others are just scared of them 2 and follow them. The girls probably shouldn't be kicked out but they do need to catch a beatdown by some older girls since they keep trying to pick on the other little girls from troop 909.
*YGC 4 LIFE*
thank you that is all

The girls in Mrs.Margolin's troop are intimadating. They judge other girls by their looks without even getting to know them, just like judging a book by its cover. For instance, Arnetta from Mrs.Margolin's class was talking about a girl smelling like a wet chihuahua coming out off the bus. She always has somthing to say. My point here is that they should not be back into the camp because they might cause some other issues.

the girls all went against the Brownies promise to get back and prove to the rest of them that it wasn't right for what they did and that it did mean something to them. for that, i think that they should still be able to reside as a Brownie, because everyone learns from their mistakes and from others. and although the girls were brutile and mean, such as when they judged the girls as soon as they came off the bus, i still stick to my decision :)

honestly this program is about the gathering of a group of kids and teens to get to know each other its not necessarily about competition unlike, according to the short story " brownies", Ms. Margolin's troop. well mostly Arnetta and Octavia who were looking for troop 909 for to intimidate right when they knew the other troop were going to come to in which they kind of succeeded. from the information from the links about how the actual camp is supposed to be like and how the rules are supposed to be followed its obvious that Ms.Mangolins weren't following the rules at all and i don't think its right.

I dont think that the girls are really true to the program, because all they were doing was trying to intimidate or do something to the the girls in troop 909. They also shouldn't be able to continue at camp crescendo because I don't think arnetta, Octavia, Janice, Daphne, and Snot will change their feelings about the other girls in troop 909.

I think that the girls aren't really true to the Girl Scout program

They call each other names, they fight, they lie. Instead of being nice and a sister to other girl scouts like it said in the rules, the girls picked on each others.

They are lucky that they're still in the program, they deserved to be kicked out of it.

I think that Snot and Daphne was true to the troop because they tried their best to stay out of trouble. Even though everyone in the troop followed every little thing Arneta told them to do, most of them tried there best to abided by the rules. But then again I don't thing they really understood the laws of being a Brownie, because your supposed to think your actions out before you do them, and they were only thinking about fighting Troop 909 just because they were real big bullies. I don't think most of them should be able to continue until they learn how to think about others and how they feel, when you say something wrong to them.

yeah i really think the girls shouldnt have acted the way they did becuse if you act without thinking someone could get hurt or even killed and the girls went after troop 909 without even getting to know them, they just look at them and judge them.

I don't believe that the girls were true to the progam and the law at all.Part of the law is about respect and the girls didn't seem to have respect for anybody, not their elders and not even for the other girls in their own troop.Arnetta and Octavia seemed to be bossy and treated the rest of the girls rudely even when they were on their side.I also think that they should be allowed to still be Brownies, they just need to learn self disciplin and maybe have older Girl Scouts as role models and to keep them in check.

of course they aren't true to the program. all they do is get the other group before they get them.

i believe that only certain people should be punished. especially the group leader Arnetta. she wasn't exactly setting a good example. i wouldn't put the groups in camp at the time. i would send the other group after the first one leaves

Well Arnetta, and Octavia are not true to the code at all. While Janice and the other girls just want to fit into the group. While Daphne and Snot try to be true to the code. I think that all the girls who participated in the "fight" should be kicked out. Especially Arnetta and Octavia for trying to pick the fight with Troop 909 for no reason. "Girls learn the spirit of teamwork"(Girl Scouts of America Program Goals). "The Girl Scout Promise is the way Girl Scouts agree to act every day toward one another and other people, and the Law outlines a way to act towards one another and the world."(Girl Scouts Promise and Law).

I really don't believe that Ms.Margolin's troop should have the privlage of being called a brownie because they do the opposite of what there supposed to do.So i think they shouldn't be let back in!

i think that Ms. Margolin's troop weren't sticking to the girl scout laws and promises b/c when you're a girl scout, you're supposed to be nice and polite like troop 909. But it is good that they are strong and mature.

I dont think they should continue to be scouts at Camp Crescendo. They had to be true and honest and apparently the weren't. When they got sent home it was the best thing to happen.

i don't believe the girls really cared about if the camp or anything because in teh girls scout promise itsaid you have to be honest, respectful, true, and helpful. with waht the girls have done and acted they don't deserve that they should move on to a higher podition if they don't get their act together.

Anonymous said...

i like the girl scouts promise, and how they are true to their camp. but i believe that they broke their promise when they wanted to get the girls back at the camp, if you make a promise like that you have to stick to it because i knew a friend who was a boy scout and they are really strict about the rules.

Anonymous said...

i know the girl didnt follow up on the promice they made but i think that the girls should be able to still be in the program because there still young and are learning so of course, there going to make some wrong choices and mistakes. this was one mistake they made and they deserve to still have the right to be in the program because we all need to have a second chance. this is one lesson they just need to learn from.

When I first saw the picture I thought to myself no way but then when I thought to myself again there looks fooled people first impression. At the end of the book I thought the girls weren't true to the brownies ar all but at the same time they had to defend themselves.

Anonymous said...

I do not believe that the girls in brownies are true to the girl scout law at all. They break the first rule in the law already which is to be honest when they make up that the girls in 909 called daphne the 'n' word. They also were not considerate nor caring because they did not look at the way the girls in troop 909 could feel they just judged them as spoiled white girls and saw past there mental/learning disabilities. Unless they get serious help with there attitude then you should not be let back in the camp.

I don't think the girls in the troop were true to their goals at all besides the fact they sort of worked as a team.. but in doing the WRONG thing. I think they went the opposite way of what your suppose to do as a Brown Girl Scout. They looked into more negative things to do rather then positive, to ruin other people's time rather then contribute to improve in their society as the goals say. They didn't go with the promise as given, so I dont think they should remain in the camp..

Honestly, i think they girls should have been the "bigger people" and just let it blow off their shoulder. they shouldnt have reacted the way they did without know trop 909's condition. even though they were defending their race and what they stand for, using violence wasnt the way to handle it.

i think that the girls shouldnt show others how to lead when they themselves dont know how to lead or even folllow.
