Bullying

From the first moment Jack encountered Piggy on the island he has behaved aggressively toward Piggy. Read the article, "School Bullying is Nothing New, But PsychologistsIdentify New Ways to Prevent It" and note both Jack's and Piggy's behavior/personality characteristics that allow the bullying to happen.

Next find and click the link called Bullying Circle. This describes the behavior of others involved in bullying.

Now that you have looked at bullies, victims and others involved in the act of bullying, comment about how the character you are studying in LOTF fits the patterns described.

Well first of all my character is Ralph. I think Ralph is part of the possible defender group on the bullying circle. Ralph sees the bullying of Piggy, and allows it to continue. I think this is because last time he tried to defend Piggy he accidentally let Piggy's nickname "Piggy" slip and then everyone knew that he was called Piggy at his old school. I think he doesn't defend Piggy anymore because he is affraid he might mess up again and make Piggy look bad.

I agree with Ambramhenry3 i too believe that Ralph played a good portion in the "torementing" on Piggy because of the revealing of his nickname (Passive Supporter). With Jack being the "bully" and Piggy being "fat" and called "PIGGY" Basically stes him up for bullying.

My character is Jack so it is easy to figure out that Jack is the bully. Once Jack lays eyes on Piggy he already starts to degrade Piggy because of his appearance. It seems like Jack is in need to show dominance over the inferior to show that he is superior and way better than everyone. Jack shows little pity for Piggy and does not cut him any slack. The way Jack treats Piggy is a great example of what is going on in schools all over the world

My character is Piggy. Piggy fits in these patterns of being bullied is by having low self-esteem and not standing up for himself. On the Bulling Circle chart Piggy is being the victim in which he is bullied by Jack. This represents that Jack puts Piggy down in many ways becase i think Jack wants to show that he is better than anyone else on that island. The victim whom is being bullied "often do not have a single good friend and relate better to adults than to peers." This is why Piggy calls the "littluns" immature and cannot play or talk to them.

My character's name is roger and from the bully circle i can see hes a type A bully and can bully without any regrets or feeling. Also he effects the boys around,we see this when the boy follows exactly as he does by throwing sand in his friend's eye and i think this will forshawdow a later event where people will end bulling each other like he does

Anonymous said...

My character is roger and he starts the bullying but he also spreads it.But he also copied Jack before and he was one of Jacks followers like when he started the vote and voted for Jack but as he learned later on and they all became more primative all his bullyness comes out of him and by then end they will all fend for themselves and bully one another

My character is Roger and what he is, he's a bully that has no regret of anything. He stormed the littlun's sand castle, and never even cared how hard they try to build it. He became a bully just because he's part of Jack's group, and they became savages, they changed into a whole different kind of people, they never even cared about others anymore.

My character in LOTF is Jack. In the bullying circle he is probably A, because he's the one who starts the bullying with Piggy all the time. He calls him names like Piggy, and compares him to real pigs. Jack is alaways hunting pigs, and that might symbolize that Jack might want to kill Piggy. Jack is very aggressive, and sadistic, and he is kind of looked up to by the other hunters, and he is self-confident and that fits the profile of a bully. Piggy is a loner, fat, and he puts himself out to get picked on. Because he's fat that makes him a easay target also. He is also anxious, and cautious so that fits the profile from the article. He doesn't have a single good friend, which means he has no one to back him up. Since Piggy is fat he is physically weaker, and out of shape which brings Jacks bullying on. Jack fits the patterns described in the article because he has high self-esteem, and he has a following of other kids. He's athletic, good shape, and he is aggressive.

Piggy is a victim of all the crew. He got a lot of ideas and the other guys, as Ralph or Jack, take it away from him, and they always trying to make him feel as he is nothing, as he weren't a human, they hurt his feelings just to make a fool of him.

Anonymous said...

well it says that " they have a strong need to dominate and subdue other students and to get there own way." this reminds me of jack because in the beginning he had control over his guys when they first met ralph. he also really and deperatley wanted to kill a pig to show his strentgh. when Olweus describes the passive victims, it reminds me of piggy because he doesn't have a good friend like how ralph has simon and how jack has roger and he was always saying he was with his aunt and he is physically weaker then jack and ralph. but now piggy is sticking up for himself and showing jack he won't take his crap anymore.

The character I am studying is Piggy and he falls under the catagory of the victim in the bullying circle. He fits this description perfectly. He is sensitive about his nickname, he is insecure about his appearance, he's mostly quiet, and he doesn't have any good friends on the island.

finally, some research proves that bullyers don't have low self esteem. i've always heard from adults that bullys have low self esteem and being someone who has been bullied(a tiny bit) and who has bullied and made fun of a couple of people from time to time, i have always known that the motives aren't from low self esteem. Jack doesn't have low self esteem, he just has more respect and higher up on this social latter, so he abuses this power on Piggy, who is at the bottom so to speak.

I think Jack has the attitude of bullying the other characters because he's been agressive and vicious to the other boys in the hut. Jack is a person who i would consider a bully person because he's maybe tried of them boys.

Roger is a bully and doesn't really care that he's one.For example when he stomped all over the little one's catsle's he had no sympathy toward their hard work.Roger is a bully to only the little one's because he knows that they will listen to him.Ever since he's been in Jack's present he's been thinking that he can do whatever he wants, which is bully the little one's!

My character,Ralph, would obviously be a defender because he always has to protect Piggy because he can't do anything himself. Ralph doesn't really do a great job at it because Piggy still gets capped on anyways. Piggy needs to get off Ralph's jock and be on his own hype. And that's all I got to say about that.

My character is Simon. Due to the bullying circle I consider my character as (E) Disengaged onlooker (watch what happens, is none of my business; don't take stand). My character represents this category because in the story when everyone bullies "Piggy" he isn't mentioned at all, so I'm assuming he didn't want to have to do anything with the bully situations. He was there watching all this happened, but he didn't laugh or pick on "Piggy" like everyone did... but at the same time neither did he defent "Piggy".

My character is Roger. Roger has not played a big role in the book yet but it seems as if he will because of how he is decscribed as secretive. The only way he has been a bully would be when he kicked over the littluns' sand castle and kept walking while Maurice laughed. This then made one of the littluns' feel as if he could be a bully to. The way he picks on the littler kids to get a sense of power is how he is a bully.

the character im studying is simon. i think he is in the F category as a possible defender. he doesnt really do anythin to help stop the bullying but he does kind things to piggy. for example when jack smack his glasses simon got it for him, and when jack wouldnt give piggy any meat simon gave him some of his. he is kind ti piggy in his time of need and when jack is mean to him.

My character is Ralph, and i think he fits in the bulying circle by being the "possible defender". He tries to stick up for the group, and do whats best for everybody. However, when Piggy gets picked on, he doesnt help, he is just off to the side watching. Also, Jack is a big bully because he only picks on Piggy because he wants to feel more powerful then everybody else, and he wants the others to be scared of him.

I would say that Ralph is the good side of Piggy's being bullied and Jack is the dark side. I think Ralph doesnt want to make Piggy look and feel bad so I think that is one of the main reasons why he doesnt defend him as much as he used to. No one wants to make the same mistake as they did before and that goes to show that Ralph might have a situation that he has a tough time solving. Which is: defend Piggy and make him feel bad for the right reasons or not defend him and watch him get lower and lower emotionally for the wrong reasons. What will he choose?

Jack has a much forceful/dictatorship
leader ship to get control of the group. He will insult you and make you feal bad until he has got you to follow him. He insults piggy by calling him "Fatty". On the other hand, Piggy, a rule following guy who
likes the idea of the speaker holds the conch when speaking and nobody else talks. Piggy gets picked on by Jack and i think jack thinks he can because piggy is fat and thats the first insult that usually comes to someones mind when insulting a fat person. Also jack thinks he is much stronger then everyone and that he is the "hunter" and he is so bad and such a villian.

Jack is the type of character that seems to like to be more dominant over others.Piggy is the type that is self-conscience and gets along better with adults because in the story it says how he is really close with his aunt but he never talks about any friends his age. My character is Simon. Simon is the type that seems to dislike bullying but doesn't say anything. One time though when Jack wouldn't let Piggy get any meat, Simon shared his. This shows that Simon is also a deffender when it comes to bullying.

Piggy is my character and he can easily be bulllied because he has no confidence and is bullied by Jack, which has the characteristics of being a bully, which are the strong need to dominate and manipulate others, and quick-tempered and impulsive. Piggy is passive and he is quiet and withdrawn, so he can easily be bullied.

well the character is Ralph. Ralph can defend others but lets people bully piggy. piggy is bullied because of his features and his nickname. At first ralph tries to help but just makes it worst and i think that ralph just keeps his mouth shut to regret any problems. Jack as well is also a bully to Piggy calling him names and making piggy avictim.

I was assigned to character Piggy, from the first moment Jack encountered Piggy on the island he has behaved aggressively toward Piggy. Piggy can easily be bullied because he has no confidence. Jack, whom is Piggy’s apponent has the characteristics of being a bully. (strong need to dominate and manipulate others, and quick-tempered and impulsive) Piggy fits in these patterns of being bullied is by having low self-esteem, not standing up for himself, quiet, passive and withdrawn, so he can easily be bullied.
According to the Bulling Circle chart Piggy is being the victim in which he is bullied by Jack. This represents that Jack puts Piggy down in many ways because I think Jack wants to show that he is better than anyone else. The victim (PIGGY) is being bullied "often do not have a single good friend and relate better to adults than to peers." This is why Piggy calls the "littluns" immature and cannot play or talk to them.

My character is Ralph and i think that ralph is an onlooker but also a possible defender because he watches all this bullying going on but doesn't say anything he just tries and get his way. i kind of predict later that he will start defending piggy often though because he is starting to realize that he is smart and can ask him for help.

My character is Jack, and you can tell how much he likes to pick on Piggy. From when he first saw him it was like a lion looking at its food. Jack doesnt care if he is liked or not. Him making fun of Piggy just makes him feel better about himself and he thinks its make him look better infrong of everyone.

fosterbhenry3 said...

I think this relates to my character which is Piggy, and his the one bring bullied. This relates to him because Jacks bullies him because he is way much stronger and knows how to take control. Ralph bullies Piggy because he kinds of thinks its his right because he meet Piggy first. They also pick on Piggy because of his big appearance, and this just gives Piggy a lower self esteem. Piggy is the victim on The Bully Circle because he hasn't learn how to defend his self yet.

My character is Piggy. what I think about piggy is that he is a very smart boy, but he does not get attention from the other people because the way how he looks in the story. In this story, Piggy is the only one who is fat and no other people in the story are fat, they think that because Piggy is different that they are, so they do not need to listen to him at all. Also everytime when he speak, there must be Jack taling against Piggy. Even though Piggy is smart and he trys to help the group, there are no use, they won't listen to him.

The character i'm studying in lOTF is Ralph. From the article, i think Ralph his sord of in the middle between a defender and a bully because yea he defended piggy but then again he told the boys that were bullying him piggys nickname "piggy" which was wrong. but then in the article it says a bully is dominate to get there own way and are violent and aggressive towards others and Ralph is neither one of these.

My character in LOTF is Roger. I think Roger is shy one of the group but he can still bully somebody with no regrets or not caring that he even bullied him

The character I am studying is Simon. It says in the article how some students have the NEED to dominate over others. After reading that i immidiately thought of Jack and how he tried to become chief and how bad he wants to be the leader. He feels the need to be the one in front at all times or he will feel weak. Piggy came into the picture when Olweus describes how passive victims are, I thought of Piggy first because he is the loner in this book. The boys are leaving him behind with the littluns while they go through the forest. Piggy doesn't have a real friend to depend on.
